Field Recordings from Kushtia of Muhammad Ali Ahsan

Muhammad Ahsan Ali is a young actor and freelance audio visual professional based in Dhaka. He was associated with the late filmmaker Tareque Masud and that is how we got connected; on the day of Tareque’s memorial service in fact, in 2011.

Ali’s village home is in Kushtia and he is quite immersed in the philosophy, poetry and music of Lalon Fokir and his followers. He has been exploring the musical practice of a fast fading generation of sadhus and fokirs of his region and has so far recorded more than 300 songs in their homes. He wanted to share some of his recordings with The Travelling Archive. Ahsan Ali is part of a fraternity of Lalon believers and his faith brothers have let him record their music, trusting that that he will not indulge in any commercial activity with their knowledge, which they impart through songs. Hopefully we, The Travelling Archive community, will be worthy of that trust.

Ali’s Diary

I am Ali Ahsan. Professionally I work as an actor, freelance field recordist and location manager, in feature and documentary films, theatre and advertisement.

I am from Kushtia, Bangladesh. For many years I have been accompanying followers of Lalon Shai in Kushtia, who are both practitioners and performers. They consider these songs to be expressions of devotion; music is for them a way of worship. Ever since I heard them, I have been trying to understand Lalon Shai ji’s dedicated path and thoughts. The sadhu fokirs and artists sincerely help me in my work.
The past years have seen increasing abuse of LalonShai ji’s songs, with people trying to mix this very precious folk music with so-called fusion, modern urban music and international music. I began to collect songs sung by the sadhu fakirs as a reaction to this phenomenon; my motive was to keep a record of this precious musical genre before it is totally lost. Most of the sadhu fakirs who are followers of Lalon are becoming very old. I am worried that this philosophy will soon be lost forever, because I believe that their songs hold canonical knowledge. However, once I started to record the sadhu fokirs, I found songs of many more fokirs and Vaishnava sadhus, and this helped me to better understand the philosophy of Lalon Shai ji.

Here I am presenting Nahir Shah, Doulat Shah, Bolai Shah, Afsar Uddin Fokir and Bojlu Shah. I have recorded many fokirs and Vaishnava sadhus. Nahir Shah and Doulat Shah trust me as their son; we are bound by piety. Bolai Shah and Afsar Uddin are like my brothers. With Bojlu Shah too it is the same. I have permission from all of them to disseminate these songs through non-commercial means.

আলীর ডাইরি

আমি আলী আহসান। পেশায় চলচ্চিত্র, প্রামাণ্যচিত্র, নাটক আর বিজ্ঞাপন চিত্রে অভিনেতা, ফ্রিলান্স ফিল্ড সাউন্ড রেকর্ডিস্ট, লোকেশন ম্যানেজার, ফিক্সার ইত্যাদি ।

আমার বাড়ি বাংলাদেশের কুষ্টিয়াতে । আমি বহু দিন ধরে কুষ্টিয়ার লালন অনুসারী সাধু ও শিল্পী, যাঁরা ভাব সঙ্গীতকে প্রার্থনা হিসেবে বিবেচনা করেন,তাঁদের সাথে সঙ্গ করে আসছি । তাঁদের কাছে গান আর ভাবের কথা শুনে আমি লালন শাঁইজীর সাধনার পথ ও মত বোঝার চেষ্টা করছি । এই কাজে সাধু ফকির এবং শিল্পীদের আন্তরিক সাহায্য পেয়েছি । বিগত কিছু বছর ধরে লালন শাঁইজীর পদগুলোর তথাকথিত ফিউশন করে,আধুনিক নাগরিক ও আন্তর্জাতিক সঙ্গীতের সাথে এর সংমিশ্রনের চেষ্টা করে অনেকেই মহামূল্যবান লোকজ এই সঙ্গীতের কথা ও সুর বিকৃত করছেন । এসব দেখে ও শুনে আমি এই সঙ্গীত সংগ্রহ শুরু করি,উদ্দেশ্য ছিল এই মহামূল্যবান সঙ্গীতের ধারাটি হারিয়ে যাওয়ার আগে একে যতোটা সম্ভব সংগ্রহ করে রাখা । কারণ লালন অনুসারী সাধু ফকিরদের বেশিরভাগই বয়োবৃদ্ধ । হয়ত এই সাধন মার্গীয় মানুষগুলো হারিয়ে যাবেন শিগগিরই । আমার ভয় হয়। কারণ, লালন শাঁইজীর পদগুলোর বাণী ও সুরের ক্ষেত্রে তাঁদের পরিবেশনাই আমি প্রামাণ্য জ্ঞান করি । কিন্তু রেকর্ড শুরু করার পরে লালন শাঁইজীর পদ ছাড়া আরো এমন অনেক ফকির ও বৈষ্ণব মহতের পদ শুনলাম, যা আমকে লালন শাঁইজীর দর্শন বুঝতে গভীরভাবে সাহায্য করে।

নহির শাহ, দৌলত শাহ, বলাই শাহ,আফসার উদ্দিন ফকির, বজলু শাহ সহ অনেক সাধু ফকির, বৈষ্ণব এবং ভাব সঙ্গীতের শিল্পীর গান আমি রেকর্ড করেছি । নহির শাহ, দৌলত শাহ ঘরের ছেলে হিসাবে আমার উপর ভরসা করেন, উনাদের সাথে আমার ভক্তির সম্পর্ক। বলাই শাহ, আফসার উদ্দিনদের সাথে আমার গভীর ভ্রাতৃপ্রতীম সম্পর্ক। বজলু শাহ আমার বড় ভাই-এর মত । উনাদের সবার কাছ থেকে আমার অনুমতি নেয়া আছে যে, এই গান আমি অবাণিজ্যিক যে কোনো কাজে ব্যবহার করতে পারি ।

এইখানে আমি আমার সংগৃহীত গান থেকে নির্বাচন করে কয়েকটি রাখলাম।

Bolai Shah

Bolai Shah (b. 1965) lives in Molla Para village of Chheuria, Kushtia, very close to Lalon Fokir’s mazar. His is a disciple of Abdur Rob Fokir, spiritually who belongs to the lineage of Lalon.

বলাই শাহ

বলাই শাহ কুষ্টিয়ার কুমারখালি থানার ছেউরিয়া মোল্লা পাড়া গ্রামে ১৯৬৫ সনে জন্ম গ্রহণ করেন। বাবা মরহুম মনসুর আলী মোল্লা মাতা জাহানারা বেগম। লালন শাইজীর ধামের কাছেই উনার বাড়ি।

ছোটোবেলায় রেডিওতে গান শুনে মাঠে গরু চরাতে গিয়ে সেই গান গেয়ে বেড়াতেন। আবদুল আলীম ছিল বলাইয়ের প্রিয় শিল্পী। একদিন বাড়ির পাশে রেল লাইনে বসে আবদুল আলীমের গান গাইছিলেন, কেউ একজন গান শুনে বলেছিলেন লালনের মাজারে গিয়ে গান করো একদিন তোমার অনেক নাম হবে। মাজারে বলাইয়ের দেখা হয় তখনকার গুণী শিল্পী আবুল হোসেনের সাথে। আবুল হোসেনের কাছে হাতেখড়ি লালন শাইজীর সংগীতের আর আধ্যাত্মিক দীক্ষা নেবার জন্য বাইয়াত হয়েছিলেন লালন শাইজীর আধ্যাত্মবাদের উত্তরসূরী আব্দুর রব শাইজীর।

Afsar Uddin Fokir

Afsar Uddin Fokir (b. 1942) lives in Sinhati village in Pirajpur, Meherpur in the Kushtia region. He was a jatra (folk thetare) actor in the late sixties, before coming into the music of the fokirs and sadhus of his region. His spiritual guru was Akbar Ali Shah, while he learned music from Jhoru Shah, Mokshed Ali Shah, Behal Shah, Mahendra Gosai and others.

আফসার উদ্দিন ফকির

আফসার উদ্দিন ফকিরের জন্ম ১৯৪২ সনের গ্রীষ্ম কালে। বাবা মরহুম আহাদ আলী মণ্ডল মাতা রহিমা খাতুন। উনার নিবাস মেহেরপুর জেলার পিরজপুর ইউনিয়নের সিংহাটি গ্রামে। যাত্রাপালা করতেন ১৯৬৮-৭৩ সময়ে। এই সময়ে ১৯৭১-এ ভাব সঙ্গীতের প্রতি আকৃষ্ট হন। সেই থেকে ভাব সঙ্গীতের চর্চা করে আসছেন। ঝরু শাহ, ইউনুস আলী শাহ, মকসেদ আলী শাহ, করিম শাহ, মহেন্দ্র গোসাই, মধু ভাতুরি, আতিয়ার খাঁ, বেহাল শাহ, নিমাই শাহদের কাছে উনার ভাব সঙ্গীতের শিক্ষা। আফসার উদ্দিন ফকিরের গুরু আকবর আলী শাহ, উনি দেলবার সাই এর ঘরের সাধক। ১৯৭৪-এ বাইয়াত হন তিনি।

Nahir Shah

Nahir Shah lives in Pragpur, Daulatpur in Kushtia. He is a singer and spiritual teacher in the Lalon Shah lineage. He is also a song collector who has in his collection hundreds of songs of unknown composers in the mystic traditions of this region. Nahir Shah believes that the divine resides in the human, and that if we serve humanity, then we also serve god. He fought in the war for the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971 and he engages in various kinds of social work now, including running a free homeopathy clinic.

নহির শাহ

বাবা মরহুম মায়নুদ্দিন সরদার, মা মরহুমা সেরেজান নেসা, গ্রাম প্রাগপুর, থানা দউলতপুর, জেলা কুষ্টিয়া। পূর্বপুরুষ নদিয়া জেলার হোগলবাড়িয়া গ্রামের অধিবাসী, উনারাও সাধু গুরু ভক্ত ছিলেন। পারিবারিক পরিমণ্ডল থেকেই নহির শাহের ভাব জগতের প্রতি আগ্রহ। ১৯৭৪ সনে একমাত্র মেয়ে যেদিন জন্মগ্রহন করে সেই দিনে গুরুবাক্য গ্রহণ করেন, ফকির লবান শাহ ওরফে আব্দুর রব শাইজীর কাছে। ১৯৯৩ সালে তিনি খেলাফত পান। তারপর তিনি আশ্রম প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন নিজ গ্রাম প্রাগপুরে।

আব্দুর রব শাহের প্রধান খলিফা নহির শাহ একাধারে আধ্যাত্মিক গুরু, ভাব সংগীত শিক্ষক, সংগীত সংগ্রাহক, সমাজ সেবক, হোমিও চিকিৎসক। অনেক অজানা মহতদের বহু গান তিনি লিখে রেখেছেন, অনেক সাধক-শিল্পীকে উনি গানের বাণী ও সুরের শিক্ষা দিয়ে থাকেন। ১৯৭১ এর মহান স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধে তিনি সক্রিয় অংশগ্রহণ করেন। ৮ নম্বর সেক্টর-এর অধীনে উনার গেরিলা নম্বর ছিল ৬৩। দেশ স্বাধীন হবার পরে ভলেনটিয়ার সার্ভিস, ত্রাণ ও পুনর্বাসন, সেচ প্রকল্প, গ্রামে স্কুল প্রতিষ্ঠা, বাস স্ট্যান্ড চালু করা, নতুন রাস্তা নির্মাণ ইত্যাদি নানা মানবহিতকর কাজে নিয়োজিত ছিলেন। বর্তমানে দাতব্য হোমিও চিকিৎসা সেবা দেন।

নহির শাহের সাধন দর্শন সম্পর্কে উনার নিজের ভাষ্য হল, “আমার তরিকত চিশতিয়া খানদানে নিজামিয়া তরিকতে ওয়াহেদানিয়াত অর্থাৎ গুরুবাদী ধর্ম। মানুষ ভজে মানুষ হতে হবে। এই মানুষ ভজে মানুষ হতে হলে পরে শাইজীর নামের সঙ্গে শাইজীর রূপ এই রূপের মাধ্যমে স্বরূপ, স্বরূপের দর্শনের মাধ্যমে তার আত্মদর্শন লাভ –এটাই পথ মেনে চলার একটা বিশেষ রাহা। একে বলা হয় তরিকতে ওয়াহেদানিয়াত বা একাত্মবাদ। এই একাত্মবাদ স্বীকার করে একে গুরু নিষ্ঠার উপরে ভিত্তি করে আমরা মনে করি সশরীরে শাইজীর নৈকট্য পাবো। এটাই আমাদের আশা বাসনা এবং আত্মবিশ্বাস। বা এর যে বাস্তবরূপ সেটাই এটা”।
