Presence in Absence

Throughout this work I have moved, sometimes following, sometimes anticipating and sometimes standing face to face with Arnold Bake’s field recordings from and from around Bengal. Like the man Bake with his recording machine, the land of Bengal has also been at the core of my work. As always, I am moved by questions of home, homeland, displacement and the search for home, and this thesis has been no exception. For me, listening to old recordings also means listening to the history of the land from where the recordings come. Therefore, I end with a song, made of several songs and which holds a range of sounds: from spoken word and song to the gyrating noise of the wax cylinder from the archives, all of which also speak of this land.

Desh Bideshe Berai Ghure

I move through many lands, I move from land to land. In the course of this work I have realized that home and homeland are as illusory as the moner manush, the one whom the heart desires and for whom the search never ends.
